I am a fourth year PsyD student at Adler University in Vancouver and am looking to set up an internship in Nova Scotia for next year.

I’m wondering if there are any guidelines or requirements about what an internship needs to include to be deemed acceptable when applying for registration with NSBEP. In BC, there is an outline included in the college bylaws, but I don’t see a similar document available for NSBEP.

Specifically, I would like to know whether an internship requires two interns at the site or if one intern is suitable.

If you could point me in the direction of the applicable documents and/or give me some guidance on the number of interns I would greatly appreciate it.

We encapsulate these broadly in the NSRP Criteria for Acceptable Degrees in Psychology.

Critical requirements of note are that the internship form an integrated part of the graduate program in psychology and be supervised by a psychologist(s).

Here are some elements we would generally expect to see as part of an appropriate internship:A minimum of 75% of the supervision during practical training should be direct in-person with visual or verbal communication in real time.

If part of the practical training consists of supervising interns, this could be included.

The primary supervisor must be a registered psychologist in the jurisdiction in which the student is training.

The internship must be an organized and integrated component of the graduate training program.

A minimum of 600 hours of pre-degree practicum experience (including a minimum of 200 hours of face to face client contact) and a minimum of 1600 hours in a pre-doctoral internship/residency.

There must be accountability by the practicum supervisors and internship/residency program to the student’s training program.

A formal evaluation of the student should be provided, tied to behavioural exemplars, and clearly outline the activities engaged in, and must indicate that the practicum was successfully completed. The evaluation of a student’s skill must be completed by multiple individuals/all supervisors.

NSRP does not currently have a requirement that there be 2 interns at the site.
