The NSBEP Supervision Handbook notes that a supervisor “should not be the employer or direct line supervisor of the candidate. Exceptions (e.g., rural settings or provision of highly specialized services) may be permitted but must be approved by the Board.”. How would I apply for consideration for this exception in order to provide some assessments through Bower-Jacquard Psychological services during my off times?I believe that this could be a reasonable course of action as having another person to support with the assessment caseload would reduce service wait times for clients. Additionally, I have completed much of my candidacy and we have a well-established rapport and track of progress, and this would provide a natural and mutually beneficial opportunity for even more close collaboration toward the end of the supervisory period. Weighing against potential conflicts of interest or power considerations, this work would be aside from my ongoing full-time employment, and I would therefore not be dependent upon my supervisor for essential economic security.

Most recently NSRP has approached this situation in the following ways:1. The candidate was encouraged to seek out a different NSRP supervisor, and the former NSRP supervisor could provide workplace supervision if desired.

2. In the event that the candidate was unsuccessful in securing another NSRP supervisor, you may request that your current NSRP Supervisor continue to provide supervision for the remainder of candidacy. If you would like to request this exemption, you should submit a letter (by email) and the request would have to be reviewed by the Registration Subcommittee of the NSRP. The NSRP does not guarantee pre approval of this arrangement. Should this option be desired, a psychologist would need to be secured who would be prepared to act as a backup or alternate NSRP supervisor should a conflict arise during the remainder of supervision. While no formal supervision would be required from this supervisor, a plan should be established to consult with them throughout the remaining supervision period to ensure they are accessible for consultation with any issues that could arise.
