REGULATING PSYCHOLOGISTS IN NOVA SCOTIA SINCE 1980

I hope you’re doing well. We have a 3rd year PsyD student interested in working with our private practice for a few months this Fall for her practicum, and hopefully will move back to our province to work once she graduates.. We’re wanting to accommodate this as best we can to give back to supervising our profession, offer her a space to learn, and serve more individuals who are currently going without mental health care, particularly at this trying time in our society.

I am wondering if you could help me with a question regarding this. We’d of course provide informed consent to clients regarding the type of practitioner she is, the fact that she is not a Registered Psychologist or Candidate Register, make them aware of her training, etc. I’m wondering if we’d be able to place her name and ‘supervised by ……, Registered Psychologist’ on the invoice, and if this would then typically be covered through some insurance companies? Do you have any information on this type of scenario or the correct protocol for this?

With respect to the informed consent process with clients, what you are proposing is consistent with what we have shared with others in situations where an individual will be working under the supervision of a psychologist.

NSRP always indicates the following:It would be important that the public clearly understands what services they are receiving and from whom (the qualifications of the provider). This would be consistent with the NSRP position on billing to ensure that billing is transparent about services provided and by whom. The URL to the statement appears below:

Concerning billing for insurance, we would again point to the above; however, we could not be more specific than the information provided in the statement on billing practices. You may wish to check with one of the primary insurance providers to ensure that what is being conveyed on the receipt would be clear to them.
