Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) has many clinicians enrolled with our mental health program who provide services to Indigenous clients. A question came up recently that I am hoping you could help me with. What happens if a clinician/counsellor has their license revoked or has restrictions on their license but continues to practice? I am wondering if the NIHB program would be informed? Or, would we only know if we checked your website to see if the clinician/counsellor’s name was removed?

To answer your question, all disciplinary decisions are posted on our public website. However, we do not specifically contact the various third party payer organizations. However, you are free to contact the NSRP to enquire whether a disciplinary finding has been issued against a psychologist. Generally we have found many third party payers may periodically check the status of psychologists and whether they are in good standing.

You are also welcome to contact us at any time to verify the status of a provider. Please note that NSRP only regulates psychologists, and other singular terms such as “counselor” and “therapist” are not a regulated titles. Yet other terms like “Counselling Therapist” would be regulated by the NS College of Counselling Therapists,
