I’m wondering if you can provide me some clarity about a jurisdictional related issue. The parent of one our youth in treatment lives in Thailand. To date I have been involving him in phone updates on the care of his son as well as seeking collateral input via phone to aid in diagnostic assessment. Can you please advise of my ability to do the following:Involve him in family therapy via zoom (youth present)

Involve him in treatment updates with the multidisciplinary team via zoom (youth present)

Offer him group based treatment via zoom (youth not present)

The standards on telepsychology advise the psychologist to ensure they are authorized to legally provide the services to the client(s). As far as your work in NS, NSRP would not have an issue with your inviting the parent to join your telepractice in NS, nor have a problem with you working with the child and/or parent in this circumstance. However, we cannot speak about whether the jurisdiction where the parent is located would view this as practice in their jurisdiction with the parent. We would be inclined to see the practice occurring here in NS, given the circumstances presented. However, NSRP is legally only able to speak to the jurisdiction of Nova Scotia.
