One lingering question I have about the application is the Practice Profile which I am finding somewhat confusing. The complicating factor is that I’m employed full-time as a professor at MSVU but I am applying to the Candidate Registry so that I may practice clinical psychology on a part-time basis. So for Part A on the Practice Profile, I’ve indicated that I am employed “Full-Time.” Then I have checked “Private Practice” and “University/College” as my areas of practice and then “University/College” as my primary work setting.
So far so good. But then in Part B, I’m not sure whether I should be indicating the percentage of time in each area I will be working for both my full-time university position and part-time private practice or ONLY the part-time private practice. I’ve initially filled it out based on the former (both academic and clinical positions) such that I have “Clinical Psychology” listed at 10%, “Formal Research” at 30%, “Administration” at 10% (i.e., university administrative work), and “Academic (teaching psychology)” at 50%.
Then in Part C, four categories (Clinical Psychology, Formal Research, Academic, and Administration) are listed in each box. I’m confused about what should be checked off for the “Formal Research” and “Academic Columns.” For instance, in the row for “Adults” under the column “Formal Research” I can check off any of “Clinical Psychology,” “Formal Research,” “Academic,” and “Administration.” So what does it mean to check “Formal Research” of “Formal Research” of “Adults”? It seems a bit redundant but I think I might be interpreting it wrong.
The reference form also asks that I forward the practice profile to references but there’s no option to save a copy of the practice profile as a standalone document. As a work around I can screencap them and send that along to the references. I’ve attached a copy of my practice profile which was taken as a screencap. Is there a better way to do that?
What he has done [filled it out based on the former (both academic and clinical positions)] is the best approach. When one will be initially going onto the candidate register, the NSRP appreciates having it filled out this way as it provides a full picture of one’s employment. He is right. Part c of the practice profile does […]
The NSBEP Supervision Handbook notes that a supervisor “should not be the employer or direct line supervisor of the candidate. Exceptions (e.g., rural settings or provision of highly specialized services) may be permitted but must be approved by the Board.”. How would I apply for consideration for this exception in order to provide some assessments through Bower-Jacquard Psychological services during my off times?I believe that this could be a reasonable course of action as having another person to support with the assessment caseload would reduce service wait times for clients. Additionally, I have completed much of my candidacy and we have a well-established rapport and track of progress, and this would provide a natural and mutually beneficial opportunity for even more close collaboration toward the end of the supervisory period. Weighing against potential conflicts of interest or power considerations, this work would be aside from my ongoing full-time employment, and I would therefore not be dependent upon my supervisor for essential economic security.
Most recently NSRP has approached this situation in the following ways:1. The candidate was encouraged to seek out a different NSRP supervisor, and the former NSRP supervisor could provide workplace supervision if desired. 2. In the event that the candidate was unsuccessful in securing another NSRP supervisor, you may request that your current NSRP Supervisor […]
I had a call and she is wondering if there is a release form for co-supervisors to allow them to discuss the candidate.
NSRP does not see it as problematic for the co-supervisors to speak about the candidate, Both supervisors have been jointly approved and all parties were sent the letter of approval, In fact, NSRP sees this communication as very appropriate and supports such coordination. However, NSRP has not established a specific consent form for this purpose. If […]
In terms of self-directed learning, is watching instructional videos on Youtube permitted? I am talking about videos that are posted by seemingly credible sources, such as the psychology department of a particular university, for example, or a video in which the presenter is regarded as a credentialled expert in the presentation content. If Youtube videos are okay for this purpose, it would be one point per hour of viewing, right?
To answer your question, I was advised that NSRP doesn’t vet individual videos for self-directed learning, and I suggest that you could list the videos and the source if you would like. It could be tied to one’s CC Learning Plan and would be within the discretion of the registrant, and would receive the credit as […]
I am writing to inquire regarding applying to the candidate register. I have completed my coursework and practicum in Acadia University’s MSc Clinical Psychology program and I have secured a positions pending graduation, as well as a NSBEP supervisor. However, I am in the final stages of completing my thesis. I’m wondering if it is possible to initiate the application process prior to defending my thesis, or do you require that this component is also completed prior to the application being submitted?I am also wondering whether you require NSBEP supervision for all areas of practice. For example, if I intend to practice EMDR (with the relevant certifications) in addition to other modalities, is it necessary to have NSBEP supervision with someone who has expertise in all modalities, or is it sufficient to have a supervisor with expertise in most, but not all modalities, in addition to peer consultation and collegial support in the areas that the supervisor does not practice.
While the NSRP would be amendable to approving a second supervisor to complete a portion of NSRP supervision for this work, it would be acceptable for another psychologist(s) to act as a mentor/consultant on this work. In this role, they would provide support on the activities you have outlined and supply regular feedback to your […]
Registrant called with the following scenario, He is opening a private practice that has 1 fully registered psychologist and 2 Candidate registrants:Would the fully registered psychologist be the sole owner or is it permissible for all three to be equal owners in the business.
As you probably recall, the following is a stated requirement in the Conditions of Candidacy for those on the Candidate Register:You are not permitted to engage in your own independent practice work during the period of candidacy. It is important for you to have access to a registered psychologist for collegial support, consultation and supervision […]
There is a psychologist at my practice who will be doing that. Do I need her to complete a form as well? If I have two supervisors are they still each required to meet with me 2 hours and complete forms each month or would 1 be considered my primary and could just get updates from the person who would supervise my adult assessments?I have uploaded your supervisor consent form and the Board would approve her to supervise your work with children and adolescents.
However, do you have someone in mind to supervise your assessment work with adults or do you no longer wish to declare assessment with adults at this time?
I have consulted on your follow up question. It would be acceptable for the person at the practice to act as a mentor on this aspect of your work. In such a case, it would be important for the individual to provide support on your work with adults and supply regular workplace feedback to Holly, […]
When reporting my hours, do you know if I am allowed to count assessment preparation (like reading necessary background materials provided by the referral source)?
Yes, they can count activities that are relevant to her client work.
I have a question I would like some clarification on as I have had a few different responses when consulting with other psychologists.
We currently have a colleague who has completed their training at MSVU in the School Psychology program and is confirmed to graduate in the fall. They are also in the midst of applying to be on the candidate register. While they are waiting to get on the candidate registrar are they only permitted to complete psycho-educational assessments, as an educational assessor, and have them signed off on by a registered psychologist and consult with school about educational difficulties OR are they also permitted to conduct behavioral observations and Functional Behaviour Assessments under the supervision of a registered psychologist? For example, could they observe the student in class and then discuss with a psychologists about the observations and the function of the behaviour and possible recommendations and then after speaking with the psychologist they could make the recommendations to the school/family. All of this of course would be done with proper informed consent.
I just wanted to clarify as I was under the impression they could only do psych-ed assessments until they were on the register. Others have said they are able to do all duties of the school psychologist under supervision while waiting to get on the register.
I have consulted on your enquiry. The additional circumstances you have outlined would not be problematic, given the work would be done under the supervision of a psychologist and clients are informed of the arrangements (of course the individual would be careful not to identify as a psychologist until they are registered with NSRP). The […]
I am contacting you to inquire about a recent training that I participated in where the facilitators are not sure if my CE credit would be applicable as they are only able to provide credit through the APA. I wanted to clarify that it would still count toward my professional development/CE credits.
This does not make much sense as she is a candidate unless she is wanting to impress upon NSRP how she wants to do this anyway. You could indicate the following (thanks):The NSRP Continuing Competence Program does not apply to those the Candidate Register who are participating in supervision and other candidacy requirements, so there […]
